ANY COLOUR YOU LIKE / 2014

"ANY COLOUR YOU LIKE", LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE, Quebec, Canada

wood, fabric, microphone

In this installation work entitled: ”Any Colour you Like“ Perkov addresses the notion of identity: cultural, and individual identity as well as political identity.
Does the flag we chose to express our identity really define us?
What would we have to say if we stood at a rostrum under a flag?
Transforming LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE in a venue of free speech, Vedran builds seven rostrums each one equipped with a microphone facing seven different-color flags.
Each flag color embodies a distinct political orientation.
The public is invited to choose a flag and stand at the rostrum to speak … or not.
This exercise reminds us slightly of the free speakers standing in soapboxes in London’s Hyde Park.
Vedran’s more solemn variation of citizen’s free speech takes on none the less a whimsical aspect with the splashes of the seven colors of seven flags: from Hyde to Park Luna Park.
Perkov hand us the required tools for public speaking, will we speak?

ON RÉALISE QUE L’ON A TOUT PERDU / 2013

Rennes, France

During his one-month residency in partnership with the PHAKT - Colombier Cultural Centre (Rennes, France), Vedran Perkov, Croatian artist living in Split, thought a work for the public space, made projections, stickers and audio installations.
Moved into territory which he did not know the language, he chose to tap into popular culture, inspired by the famous song Non, je ne regrette rien, and telenovelas scenes descriptions.
Out of context and disseminated in the public space, the selected sentences, often trivial, create confusion between the private and public spheres, causing surprise and questioning passers-by.
Travesías review # 4 shows the work of Vedran Perkov performed at Rennes.
Each issue of this journal reports research conducted by an artist into an unknown territory.
